Passive income strategy 5 – Promoting recurring commission affiliate products.

Some people suggest that you can generate a passive income by promoting affiliate products, but, in general, I would disagree, because the kind of digital products that most affiliates promote are popular for a limited period of time. These are products that pay commission only on the initial sale and because of the competitive nature of the market for products like these, what is popular today is unlikely to be as popular tomorrow.

You need to change the product that you are promoting on a regular basis, which means that you have to create a whole new tranche of promotional materials. It is for this reason that I would argue that this is not a passive income generation strategy.

There is, however, one clear exception to this rule.

This exception is where you promote a product that has an element of recurring commission attached to it. In other words, you are working with a product where you will earn an initial commission for the primary product sale. However, the product owner will also be promoting another product ‘on the back end’ and this will be something for which you will receive a regular monthly commission payment.

In order to illustrate how this works, let us look at the #1 digital product affiliate network site, Clickbank.com. This is a site that lists over 10,000 products which you can promote immediately after your free account application is accepted.

The majority of products on the site pay you an initial commission for the primary product sale, and that is it from the affiliate point of view. These are the products that the majority of the 100,000 affiliates who use Clickbank promote, because when they search the site for a product to push, they do so looking only for the most popular ones.

Thus, they will search the ‘Marketplace’ page using the default settings like this:

However, if you change the ‘Sort by’ setting from the drop-down menu to show all products with ‘Future $’, what you are presented with is all of the products on which you can earn a recurring commission.

By way of illustration, let us look at the ‘Payment button’ on the sales page for the first product shown in the screenshot above:

You will note that there is no suggestion that there is any element of paying on a regular basis here. There is no recurring element here - the customer pays only once for this particular product. However, once they have completed their initial purchase (for which you are paid an initial commission) the customer is then presented with another highly attractive, complimentary offer for what will commonly be a closely related membership site.

Assuming that they take advantage of this additional offer, then you will be paid a monthly commission every time they pay their subscription.

You will not receive a recurring commission for every customer who buys the initial product, because not every one of them will buy the additional product that will generate your ongoing passive income. Having said that, as long as the ‘back end offer’ is sufficiently well targeted and attractive enough, the percentage of customers who decide to include that offer in their order ‘as they have their card out anyway’ should be significant, and the passive, residual income you would build up over time could be impressive.

You promote such a product in exactly the same way as you would promote any other product for which you are an affiliate.

Create another page on your site and write what reads like an objective review of the product. Highlight what you like about it but also mention a couple of things that you were not quite so impressed with.

Give the product a score for individual characteristics such as ‘Ease of use’, ‘Value for money’ etc, and try to arrive at a final total product evaluation score of something like 8.5/10. In other words, give it high score but not so high that your desire to make a sale becomes too obvious.

Finally, give the product a not too over-the-top recommendation and suggest that your visitor should buy it.

However, it is most important that you then offer them a valuable and preferably unique bonus if they buy the product through your link at the bottom of the review page. For instance, if it was the dog training product in the previous example, create your own unique ‘Top ten tips’ dog training video and offer that as the bonus. Alternatively, in the earlier fly fishing example, create a similar kind of video for keen fly fisherman.

Doing this has two very important advantages.

Firstly, if your visitor has already decided to buy the product, then it makes sense for them to do so through your link if your bonus offer is something that they recognize the value of and understand they cannot obtain it anywhere else. For this reason, the first benefit is increased sales and the possibility of increased recurring commissions on the back end product offer.

Secondly, to allow you to send this bonus to your new customer, they have to send you proof of purchase through your link by e-mail. You have just added them to your customer mailing list and we have already examined the true value of building mailing lists.

You have managed to kill two birds with one stone. You have generated a recurring, passive income by promoting the correct type of affiliate product, and you have added someone to your mailing list.

Their name is added to your autoresponder system, placing them into another of your passive income business models.

Passive income strategy 4 – Run your own eBay store

Being an active buyer or seller using eBay could not really be defined as a business model that generates a passive income, because you would have to be actively involved in running the business at all times. For example, if you were making your money by selling products that you are obtaining from drop shipping companies, you would be on a constant lookout for new suppliers, continually having to list new auctions and so on.

If, however, you were able to send visitors to a page on your site that offers them the ability to buy targeted products or services from your own eBay store, that is an entirely different matter. More importantly, if that store was regularly and automatically updated, your involvement in running the business after the initial set up would be minimal.

In order to do so, the first thing to do is apply to be an eBay affiliate through the eBay Partner Network. Once this account is set up, then every time someone buys a product from eBay through your partner link, you will be paid a percentage of eBay’s fees as a commission. Although the exact percentage of the fees that you will be paid varies from one eBay site to another (depending on which country site you work with), it is probably best to become a partner of the main US site in any case (because of the number and range of products available). In this case, the percentage varies from 50% to 75% of the fees payable.

You have already seen how you set up a WordPress blog on your own website, so now you need to log back in to the admin control panel, because you are going to create a new page where you will host your new eBay store.

In order to do so, you need yet another plug-in of which there is a free and a paid version available from phpBay. The different ‘versions’ can be found by following the ‘Products’ link on the home page.

Although the ‘Pro’ version of the plug-in is far more fully featured and flexible than the free ‘Lite’ version, even this can produce an extremely attractive and user-friendly eBay store on your site. For instance, this is an eBay store page created using the Lite version:

Once you have downloaded the plug-in, install it on your blog and then create the new page from the ‘Write’ tab at the top left:

Give the page a title that is related to the products you want to list in your store and then create the store on the new page by following the plug-in instructions. Use the primary keyword that applies to the rest of your site (which could, for example, be an AdSense site built as per income strategy 1). By doing this, the plug-in will only include products in your store that are related to that keyword term.

Your store page will be automatically updated as older auctions expire and new ones are added, so there will be a regular flow of new products for your visitors to view and bid on. You could easily make a membership site this way.

The final thing to remember is to add a link from the front page of your site to your auction store, because without an appropriate link, it is going to be very difficult for visitors to know of the existence of your store page.

Once again, after you have initially set this up, you can leave the store to run itself!

Passive income strategy 3 – Owning your own membership site.

The next passive income generation strategy that you should consider is setting up and owning your own membership site.
Once someone has been convinced to join, you can expect them to pay a monthly or weekly subscription until there comes a time when the member decides to cancel their subscription for some reason.

The #1 key to running a successful membership site is to over-deliver quality content to your membership and to offer them benefits that they cannot find anywhere else, at a highly competitive price. If you can do this, and you have a suitable traffic generation program in place that is driving new visitors to your membership site sales page on a regular basis (which you do), your member subscriptions will provide you with an ever-increasing level of passive income.

Because you only have to source or create the content materials that you are going to supply as the primary benefit of membership of your site ‘club’ once, owning a membership site represents an extremely hands-off passive income generating model.

Nor is it even necessary for your membership site to be complicated or complex. As you read in a previous post, a professional quality autoresponder system is a superb business automation tool, one that allows you to create and run a membership site from a two-page website with nothing more than an autoresponder and a method of accepting member subscriptions.

However, as you can do this through PayPal, and almost everyone has a PayPal account, even this should not represent a big problem.

The first thing to do if you want to start a membership site is decide how much money you are going to charge your members as a subscription. Unless you are in a position to provide something of genuinely unrivalled quality, you should be targeting charging your members a monthly fee of between $10 and $20.

In return for this, your members must receive products and services that taken together are valued at many times more than you are charging. This does not however necessarily mean that you have to spend the whole month creating products or services yourself.

There are plenty of sites where you can obtain products that you can offer to members of a paid-for membership site such as yours. Let us assume that you have $200 or $300 worth of products that you are going to supply to members every month in return for a membership fee of $19.95.

The first thing that you need to create is a sales page for your membership site, and on that sales page, you will include a ‘Subscription’ button. As suggested, you can create such a subscription button through your standard PayPal account. Because PayPal allows you to offer your members a free trial, I would recommend that you give a free 7 day trial so that you can ‘drip-feed’ the first ‘batch’ of products to them over that period.

Assuming that they are suitably impressed, they will not cancel their subscription and PayPal will automatically start taking their subscription after the seven days has expired. In order to send their products and services to them, after they have given PayPal their account details, the subscription button should automatically redirect them to a mailing list signup page (the second page of your site). You set this up at PayPal when creating the button.

From here, they subscribe to your autoresponder system and it is the autoresponder that sends their products automatically every month once their payment has been received.

Passive income strategy 2 – E-mail marketing using an autoresponder

Most experienced online marketers know that, even if you are producing and selling your own internet marketing products online, those sales do not represent the primary profit centre of your business.

When a customer buys a product from you, and almost irrespective of how much money they spend when they do so, you have always gained something far more valuable as an intrinsic part of that transaction.

In addition to their money, you have obtained their e-mail details, and that allows you to send a continuous stream of targeted product recommendations and suggestions to that customer. Given that they have already bought a product from you, you have a clear idea of the kind of product or service that they are most interested in, and it is therefore a simple matter to put the recommendations in front of them that you already know match their requirements.

It is because of this ability to laser target your product recommendations to existing customers on your mailing list that many experienced marketers suggest that every existing customer on your list is worth an average of $1 to your business every month.

Most successful online businesses do not, however, only have one mailing list. In addition to a list of existing customers, they will spend a great deal of time and effort on building prospect mailing lists, because it is these prospects who represent the new customers of the future.

When you first start out, you have no mailing list of your own. For many new marketers, their mailing list grows slowly until they have mastered the most effective mailing list building tactics and strategies. Assuming they confirm by clicking the link, they should then immediately receive a link to the promised free gift in the first of a series of preloaded e-mail messages that you have already created (or had created for you).

How many times a week to send an email marketing campaign?

Your autoresponder is then set by you to send mail to your prospect at whatever time intervals you like. Although it is entirely up to you how regularly you send e-mail to your prospects, most marketers set their autoresponder account to automatically send e-mail every two or three days.

In every e-mail message, there should be valuable and targeted free information that the prospect can use. For instance, to return to our earlier fly fishing example, your prospect signed up for your mailing list to get the promised free fly fishing report from your fly fishing website. If you send an e-mail series listing top fly fishing tips for free, you can pretty much guarantee that your prospect will open your e-mails because fly fishing is their ‘hot-button’.

Even though it is critical that you send them valuable information for free (because it is that free information that prompts them to open your mail), you should also include a product or service recommendation in every e-mail edition.

If you do this long enough and regularly enough, one of three things will inevitably happen.

Option one is that they will unsubscribe from your mailing list, and while this may initially appear to be a bad thing, it may in fact be nothing of the sort. By unsubscribing, they have clearly indicated that they were never going to buy anything from you anyway, so there is no value to your business having them on your mailing list. The sooner you remove them, the better it is.

Option two is that they simply stop opening your e-mails, and using the system recommended below, you will be able to see this happen.

Option Three and the most favored option is that they eventually buy something from you, and put money in your pocket.

However, the main point to appreciate about using an autoresponder is that whether you have 100 or 100,000 mailing list members makes absolutely no difference. You create your e-mailing series only once, and after that, the whole thing runs on complete auto pilot.

You can, of course, become slightly more involved in the operation if you want to, and this is likely to increase the profitability of this particular business model still further. For example, if you send your members an up-to-date weekly newsletter in addition to your automatic e-mails, you can keep them abreast of the latest news and introduce other product suggestions or recommendations to them at the same time.

Internet Passive Income Strategy 1 Using Adsense

The most straightforward proven passive income strategy is to create a website, and then feature advertising on that site from which you can generate an income.
For example, although in another post we considered advertising using the Google AdWords program, it is possible to carry these advertising materials on your own webpage using the sister AdSense program. This is ‘the other side’ of the Google PPC advertising program, and now, every time a visitor to your site clicks on an advert that you are featuring, you will be paid a percentage of the revenues that Google receive from the advertiser.

Adsense Advertising Looks Like This:

In this scenario, all that you need to have is a space where you can build a webpage that provides information to members of your target audience. You would then use the articles and videos that you created in the previous posts to send as many targeted visitors as possible to that site.

While you cannot include anything on that site that artificially encourages the visitors to click on the advertising materials that you are displaying, you do not need to do so because the advertising itself does the job for you.

This is because any advert shown on your webpage will be matched to the subject matter of that page. For instance, if your webpage is all about fly fishing, then the advertising displayed on your page by AdSense would be from companies or individuals who have a product or service to promote that is fly fishing related, due to the google system recognising your keywords. Because the adverts match the interests of your visitors, featuring PPC advertising on your site is an excellent way of generating a completely passive income.

If you have set up your site using blogger then next, look for the ‘Layout’ tab in the top left-hand corner of the screen (1) and then ‘Add a gadget’ (2) on the lower right hand side:

What Does Blog Stand For?

Blog is an acronym of weB LOG, or web logging, although some jokingly say it stands for Big Load Of Gossip. Blog’s started out as online journals where people (bloggers) could read, write or edit shared information about hobbies and common pursuits. Now you know where did the word blog come from, its time to understand "how do I start a blog"

The Search Engines love blogs as they are usually made up of topical information and are constantly updated by bloggers. So it wasn’t long before savvy marketers started using blogs to promote their businesses and indeed blogging is a fantastic way to drive traffic.

It is now possible to create an entirely free website . The primary resource that marketers use to do this is blogger.com, and while this does have the advantage of being free, it has the disadvantage that you need to have a small degree of involvement in your site once or twice a week.

This is necessary because when you create a blog site, it is essential that you add fresh content to that site every two or three days, and then ‘ping’ notification to the major search and directory sites that you have done so. By doing this, you keep the search engines ‘happy’, and that is one of the most effective ways of ensuring that you see a steady flow of new traffic on your site.

In addition to this, because blogger.com is owned by Google, it is remarkably easy to set up through your Google account. Once you have logged into blogger using either your Google log-in information or by opening a new account, the first thing you need to do is create your new blog.

This is a three step process where you choose a blog title, a URL and a template. That being done, that is it - you are good to go.

But if you are willing to spend a little money, you can set up a far more effective and efficient site that is likely to generate far more traffic than you could ever expect to raise from blogger.

The first thing you need is a specific topic or niche for your site, because you are going to register a domain name under which that site will be built. It is far more effective if that domain name can be directly related to the subject of that site.

For example, imagine that you were going to build a site that gives information to newcomers to fly fishing. In that case, a name like ‘FlyFishingNewbiesClub.com’ would be appropriate. Checking whether such a domain name is still available using a register like GoDaddy, we find that it is:

Consequently, you would register this domain name.

The next step is to find a suitable web hosting company, and there are few better than HostGator, especially as their $7.95 a month ‘Baby’ shared hosting account offers outstanding value.

The final job is to tie together your domain name and your new hosting account. You will find video instructions on how to do so at Our Internet School free members area.

The next thing you want to do is install a WordPress blog on your own website. Using HostGator, this literally takes no more than five minutes.

Open up the cpanel through which you control your site, and look for the icon for ‘Fantastico’ or ‘Fantastico DeLuxe’. Click the icon, and you come to a list of programs which can be installed on your site in a matter of two or three minutes. Amongst this list, you will see WordPress, so click the link and follow the instructions to action the installation:

Once WordPress has installed on your site, you will have a default template (known in WordPress terms as a ‘theme’) showing on your site that looks okay, but is pretty boring.

What you should do is find a free theme that matches the topic of your site from any of the free download sites listed here, and then follow the instructions that you can find here to upload this theme to your site.

Also on the page, you will find a list of essential plug-ins that you should download and install. These are complimentary snippets of software that make WordPress far more adaptable, usable and attractive to the search engines.  By installing these plug-ins, you are likely to increase your traffic numbers. One final job is to set up WordPress so that it automatically sends a ‘ping’ to the search and directory sites every time new content is posted to your blog. To do this, copy the ping list from here, open up your WordPress admin control panel and look for ‘Settings’ at the top right hand page corner:

Next, you want ‘Writing’ (top left) and scroll to the bottom of the page to ‘Update Services’:

Paste the ‘ping list’ into the box, and click ‘Save Changes’. Your blog is now set to ping every one of these services automatically with every update.

Your site is finally ready to go, and all you need to do now is start adding content. You could do this manually, as you were going to do when using blogger, but because you are using WordPress, there are a couple of additional plug-ins available that will automatically add content to your site.

The first of these plug-ins is SmartRSS, which you download entirely free by clicking on the link. However, pay attention to the installation instructions on the download page, as they are slightly different from the norm. Once this plug-in is successfully installed, it allows you to automatically add content The plug-in allows you to automatically update your site every few hours, and every time it happens, your blog will automatically send out a ‘ping’ to let everyone know of the changes.

The only problem with this method of adding content to your site is that because you are pulling that information from other people’s RSS feeds, it is not unique content. The search engines and especially Google are extremely keen on unique content, so using SmartRSS is great, but it is not perfect.

The other plug-in that you must consider using allows you to get round this problem by uploading your own unique articles en-masse to your blog, and then the plug-in will publish those articles one by one. It does this on a random time basis so that it does not appear to the search engines as if there is any automation involved in the process.

All that you need to do is go back to the articles that you wrote for your article marketing efforts and rewrite every one of them by doing little more than changing the words slightly. You then upload these articles en-masse to your site and let ZipPoster handle the task of publishing them one by one in a manner that looked entirely manual and therefore natural.

With 100 articles, if you published one every two or three days, you have a year’s worth of content available that will be posted to your site on autopilot. That should guarantee that your visitors come back time after time. Of course you should also look at adding video marketing to your blog.

Firstly, it does not really matter a great deal what the video you publish is about because the search engines cannot recognize any information in that video anyway. Many successful video marketers create and publish videos whose subject matter has little or nothing to do with their business, as long as that video is entertaining.

This is an important point to understand, because the majority of people watch videos because they want to be entertained. If your video is entertaining, it will drive traffic to your site.
Secondly, when you upload a video to a site like YouTube (the seventh most popular site on the net, with over 280 million visitors every month), you must add appropriate information about that video to your upload such as a title, description and ‘tags’.

By ensuring that all of these are keyword rich, you will be able to attract YouTube users to watch your video. Because YouTube videos are increasingly featured in the standard Google search results pages (YouTube is, after all, owned by Google), you also stand a very good chance of pulling additional video viewers from outside the site.

I am not aware of any limitation on the length of description that you add to your video, so you should include as many similar keyword terms as possible in this description.

Finally, because the ‘Tags’ (5) can only be single words, I have tried to include as many as I can that could in any way be related to fly fishing. Upload every video accompanied by information of this type, and you will draw video viewers.

The more videos you have published on hosting sites like YouTube the more that you are likely to see an increasing number of video views.
Incidentally, the reason that the URL of your site is used as the first line of the description is because a short summary of your description will automatically be displayed next to every video you publish. By including the URL of your site as the first line, you ensure that a clickable hyperlink appears right next to the video, making it considerably easier for anyone who has just watched your video to visit your website:

Using Article Directories To Get Web Traffic

We are now going to consider how you can build a traffic generation system that will send targeted visitors to your website almost on autopilot. However, this is not going to happen without a significant initial effort to put the promotional resources in place.

The more effort there is put into setting up this promotional machine in the first place, the more rewards there will be further down the line.

For example, in this post, we will look at using articles as a method of promoting your business. If you create ten articles and then decide to stop, you will generate some business but probably not a great deal. If, however, you write fifty articles, then the effect will be far greater and if it is a hundred articles, you will again see a significant leap in your sales and profits.

Of course, it is not obligatory that you create these articles for yourself. There are hundreds of freelance writers that you can find through a site like Elance.com who would be happy to do the job for you, but then you have to pay these people to do the work.

Otherwise, the success and profitability of your business in the future will be dictated by the amount of work and effort you are willing to do in these formative stages, and you should be under no illusions about this.

What Is Article marketing?

Article marketing is one of the simplest ways of promoting your business online, but done correctly, it can be extremely effective as well. It costs you nothing in monetary terms to promote your business using articles, and because those articles stay live and online for many months, it is a promotional method that will send a steady stream of visitors to your website for a long time to come without any further effort.

Each article that you write does not need to be especially long, with somewhere between 250 and 400 words per article being perfectly adequate.

Each article should feature one ‘priority’ keyword term plus another one or two secondary keywords that do not generate enough searches every day to justify writing a specific article.

For example, your primary keyword term might be one generating over 50 searches a day, and your minor terms both generating less than 10 searches a day. Nevertheless, by including these minor search terms in your article, you give yourself a good chance of appearing on the top 10 search results page for these phrases when someone searches them, which can boost your article readership by a significant percentage.

Use your primary keyword in your article title at least once, and if at all possible, twice. After that, make sure that this primary keyword term is included in both the first and last paragraphs of your article, as well as a couple more times somewhere else in the body text.

Once your article is completed, you are going to submit it to an article directory site for publication.

However, while there are hundreds of such article directly sites, there is one site that is such a dominant force in the market place that it has become the only place to where you really need to submit every article. Obviously, submitting your work to several hundred article directly sites would eat up a huge amount of time and therefore submitting to only one makes a good deal of practical sense, particularly when that site enjoys some 900% more traffic than its nearest rival!

This site is Ezinearticles, which currently attracts over 19 million visitors every month from across the world.

The first thing you need is to open an account with the site. It is completely free to do so, and as soon as your account is confirmed by e-mail, you can begin submitting your articles immediately.

When you do, you have to add the appropriate information about your article to the site section by section. To begin with, you have to insert your article title (created as suggested a little earlier). You then need to add a list of keywords and phrases that people might use when searching Ezinearticles for information such as yours. You have a maximum of 100 characters to list as many keywords as you can, so make sure that you use as much of this ‘character allowance’ as possible.

Next, you need to add a short, two or three sentence summary or description of your article. Some authors are tempted to use the first two or three sentences of the article itself, but you should not do this because it is lazy and ineffective.

When someone searches Ezinearticles using one of your keywords, they may be offered the opportunity of reading your article by having your title and short summary displayed to them. Therefore, in practical terms, they will make their decision about whether to read your article based on your title and description. The description must therefore be a powerful message that highlights what the reader will lose if they do not read your article, thereby almost forcing them to do so. Next, you add the body text of your article to the upload page before finally coming to what is the most important aspect of article marketing, the ‘Resource box’. It is in this resource box that you add some details about you and your business, as well as an active hyperlink (or perhaps two) that your reader clicks in order to be taken to your website.

The information from this resource box is then ‘tagged on’ to the end of your article like so:

Because you cannot include hyperlinks in your article, you do so in the resource box. It is therefore imperative that you do everything possible to make sure that anyone who reads your article continues on to read the information in your resource box, before clicking the hyperlink.

There are several ‘tricks’ that you must use (all of which are completely within Ezinearticles rules) to ensure that this happens.

Firstly, you must add an attractive photograph of yourself to your personal Ezinearticles profile. This photograph will be shown beneath every article that you have published on the site (as shown above) and this will increase the number of people who click through from your article to your website.

Secondly, and most critically, write your resource box as if it were the last paragraph of your article. In other words, when you create the main body text of your article, leave the final few lines out and include them instead in your resource box.

Doing this almost guarantees that the reader will also read your resource box, whereas if it is clear that the article has already finished before they arrive there, there is no clear reason why they should do so. Assuming they do not do so, they will not see your hyperlink and they cannot follow it to visit your site or blog.

In the resource box, make sure that you include your primary keyword phrase and that it is that phrase that is hyperlinked to your site. This is what is known as using anchor text, which is a powerful and widely recognized tactic for encouraging the search engines to index your article for that particular term or phrase.

Give the reader a specific reason for visiting your site. If, for example, you are giving away a market targeted free gift (e.g. a free fly fishing e-book, to continue the previous example), highlight this fact in your resource box and instruct the reader to click on the hyperlink in order to get their copy. Assuming that the reader will click on the hyperlink is one of the biggest and most common mistakes that Ezinearticles authors make, so including an instruction is of paramount importance.

Now you know how to write an article, and how to upload it to Ezinearticles in a way that will guarantee that each article you have published will drive visitors to your website.

The more articles you have published, the more visitors you will see and more sales you will therefore generate. So, as far as the article writing process is concerned, here is what you should do:-

At the beginning, it is likely that your article creation efforts will be slow and seemingly unproductive, but the more you practice, the quicker and better you will become. If someone searches Google using that phrase, they will see your article and visit your site to read it.

Thirdly, other website owners and newsletter publishers are entitled to download and republish your article in any way they see fit as long as they include your resource box when they do so. Any site owner or newsletter publisher who does this is promoting your business on your behalf.

Once your article is published, all of this happens on autopilot and will continue to do so for months or perhaps even years. These articles can be driving hundreds of visitors to your website every day and you need do nothing whatsoever after making the initial effort of publishing as many articles as you can.
