What is viral marketing? A lot of people wrongly associate viral marketing with something to be avoided. They associate the words viral marketing with computer viruses. This couldn’t be further from the truth.
Computer viruses, which every Internet user has heard about, are spread throughout the www by people who have not safeguarded their computers and open files or download programs that have intentionally been infected with other programs such as trojans. The main reason these viruses get into peoples machines is due to the fact the recipients think they are getting something exciting, fun or free of charge only to find out they have loaded a malicious piggy-back virus into their machines.
Whereas Viral Marketing is any marketing technique that induces Web sites (commonly membership sites) or users to pass on a marketing message to other sites or users, creating a potentially exponential growth in the message’s visibility and effect, usually for reward.
